Product description

This 0.53 carat round green sapphire is a finely proportioned gem, measuring 4.39 by 4.48 by 3.41 mm, faceted in a mixed brilliant cut that balances table brilliance with pavilion flash. The stone is transparent, with light color intensity and a clarity grade of slightly included, evaluated at eye level. It is notable that this sapphire displays an excellent polish and no enhancement, attributes that set it apart from many commercially treated stones. The origin is Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a source historically prized for producing sapphires with lively color and clean, glassy appearance. At this size and with these optical qualities, the gem offers a clear, appealing face up presence, and the mixed brilliant cutting style maximizes scintillation while maintaining a classical round silhouette suitable for many jewelry applications.

From an optical and gemological standpoint, corundum, the mineral species to which sapphire belongs, has a refractive index of approximately 1.76 which contributes to strong facet contrast and crisp reflections. Although corundum has relatively low dispersion, around 0.018, the mixed brilliant cut on this stone optimizes scintillation and contrast so that light performance is perceived as lively and sharp rather than watery. Compared with blue sapphires from the same family, a green sapphire of light intensity will show more subtle absorption and a softer, more diffuse color distribution, yet it can equal or exceed blue material in apparent brightness because of the way green wavelengths interact with the cut and polish. Against other commonly considered green gemstones, this sapphire offers advantages in brilliance and durability. For example, emeralds typically have a lower refractive index near 1.57 and almost invariably contain more significant inclusions, which reduces their overall brilliance and makes their surfaces more difficult to polish to an equivalent luster. Peridot and tourmaline have lower refractive indices as well, generally resulting in less dynamic facet reflections. Tsavorite garnet can rival sapphire in sparkle because of its higher dispersion, but garnets tend to be softer to varying degrees and different in tone, so a Ceylon green sapphire will appeal to buyers seeking a balance of lively light return, understated color, and robust wearability.

For the educated buyer evaluating value, provenance and treatment status are key. This green sapphire is natural and untreated, coming from Sri Lanka, and no enhancement has been applied, which enhances rarity and collector interest. The clarity grade of slightly included at eye level indicates the inclusions are not dominant, allowing the stone to retain strong transparency and face up fire, while the excellent polish ensures that facet junctions are crisp and reflective. Corundum’s hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale makes this sapphire exceptionally suitable for daily wear, whether set in a ring, pendant, or classic studs, and it will maintain its polished surfaces over time better than many alternative green gems. From a market perspective, clean, untreated sapphires with documented Ceylon origin command a premium relative to comparable stones that are heated or otherwise enhanced, and the balanced mixed brilliant cut preserves carat weight while delivering a bright, gemlike appearance. At The Natural Sapphire Company we provide full provenance information and gemological description to support confidence in purchase, and this particular 0.53 carat Ceylon green sapphire is an excellent example of how origin, cut, clarity, and untreated status combine to create a gem that is both beautiful today and durable for generations.
