This transparent 4.51 carat oval blue sapphire measures 11.72 x 8.97 x 4.96 mm, and features a mixed brilliant cut that balances pavilion depth and crown facet faceting to maximize light return. The gem displays a vivid color intensity and an excellent polish, with a clarity grade of very slightly included evaluated at eye level, and the stone has been heat treated to enhance color and stability. Origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka. The proportions and finish are consistent with the standards applied by The Natural Sapphire Company, and the overall presentation is tailored for settings that emphasize both color depth and optical performance.
The exceptional sparkle of this sapphire is a result of its corundum crystal structure combined with precise cutting and high transparency. Corundum has a trigonal lattice and a refractive index in the range 1.762 to 1.778, providing strong internal reflection when facets are aligned to ideal angles, and a modest birefringence of approximately 0.008 to 0.010 contributes subtle doubling of facet edges that enhances scintillation without causing visible optical disruption. The mixed brilliant cut uses a brilliant style crown to break incoming light into numerous return paths, while the pavilion geometry and excellent polish promote efficient routing of light back through the table and crown facets. Because this stone is transparent with only very slight inclusions at eye level, light transmission is high, which preserves vivid color saturation and allows dynamic contrast between the deep blue body color and the bright facet highlights. Heat treatment in this instance has reduced silk and dispersed color zoning, improving the uniformity of color and the consistency of light performance across the face of the gem. The result is a sapphire in which color, clarity, cut, and crystalline optics combine to produce lively brilliance, crisp facet reflections, and a depth of hue that reads as intensely blue from multiple viewing angles, making this piece a technically refined example of Ceylon sapphire material as presented by The Natural Sapphire Company.
