Product description

From the moment this stone first revealed itself beneath the warm soils of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, it began a journey that ties earth and human hands together. Miners working by knowledge passed down through generations located pockets of corundum in ancient alluvial gravels, then carefully extracted and sorted rough material with an eye honed by local tradition. Ceylon sapphires have been prized for centuries for their clarity and character, appearing in royal regalia and in stories of trade along the Indian Ocean. This particular sapphire traveled from those riverbeds to a trusted network of cutters and graders, its greyish blue hue and natural, unenhanced state marking it as a gem for connoisseurs who value authenticity. Along the way it was handled with respect for both the land that produced it and the people whose skill transformed it, a narrative that lives on in the facets and depth of color you can see with your own eyes.

At the heart of this story is a transparent 3.49 carat pear shape greyish blue sapphire, precisely measured at 10.63 by 7.59 by 5.61 millimeters, faceted in a mixed brilliant cut to balance fiery brilliance with a pleasing pavilion depth. The mixed brilliant layout brings together the best of scintillation and table light return, giving the stone life whether it is viewed in bright daylight or under softer evening illumination. Its clarity is graded very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, which means that to most observers the gem reads as clean and luminous, while under magnification small, natural features confirm its unheated origin. The color is of medium intensity, a sophisticated greyish blue that shifts with angle and light, a subtle palette that pairs beautifully with both warm and cool metals. An excellent polish ensures the surface is smooth and reflective, so every facet edge plays its part in the gem s visual conversation.

Our cutters at The Natural Sapphire Company shaped and finished this sapphire with the intention of preserving its natural character while maximizing its wearability. The pear shape is both elegant and practical, elongating settings and allowing for versatile jewelry design. As a corundum variety, sapphire ranks nine on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond in resistance to scratching, and its inherent toughness makes it an outstanding choice for daily wear. These properties mean the stone tolerates the routine knocks and abrasions of everyday life far better than many other gem varieties, making it excellent for rings that see regular use, pendants worn close to the heart, and earrings that frame the face without worry. To safeguard the delicate point of the pear, we recommend thoughtful setting choices such as a protective prong or partial bezel, which will preserve the gem for decades of wear. Routine care is simple and reassuring, warm soapy water and a soft brush will happily keep the sapphire looking its best, and because this gem is completely natural with no enhancement, its behavior under normal cleaning and wear is predictable and enduring.

Owning this 3.49 carat unenhanced Ceylon sapphire is to carry a piece of geological and human history in a form you can wear, cherish, and eventually pass on. The stone embodies the geology of ancient rivers in Sri Lanka, the patient eye of local miners, and the steady hands of cutters who balanced brilliance and shape to produce a gem that speaks of both place and craft. Its greyish blue tone is quietly distinguished, suitable for a contemporary engagement ring or a bespoke pendant that honors tradition with modern design. If you are imagining this sapphire set into a piece that will be worn every day, our gem specialists at The Natural Sapphire Company can advise on settings and metal choices that both showcase the stone and protect it for a lifetime of use. This gem waits to begin the next chapter of its story with you, a natural, durable, and beautifully finished sapphire ready to become part of your daily life.
