Product description

From the ancient riverbeds of Ceylon comes a story that begins long before this gem ever entered a jeweler s hand. In the warm soils of Sri Lanka, pockets of corundum form over millions of years under conditions of heat and pressure that coax out the deep blues that the world prizes. Miners working generations old know the rhythms of the land, watching seasonal rains and river flows to find the places where crystals reveal themselves. That lineage of care is part of what you hold in this cushion shape blue sapphire. At 2.40 carat this stone measures 7.94 by 7.11 by 4.25 millimeters, a size that speaks of presence without shouting. Its origin in Ceylon carries a cultural resonance that has tied these sapphires to local lore, protective talismans, and royal settings for centuries. When The Natural Sapphire Company offers a gemstone like this one, we are offering not only a beautiful crystal but also a living piece of geological and human history, polished and prepared for the next chapter of its life.

The transformation from rough crystal to a finished jewel is a tale of geometry and judgment. The cutter chose a cushion shape for this sapphire with a mixed brilliant cut, a decision that marries the soft, romantic silhouette of the cushion with the scintillating light performance of brilliant style facets. The mixed brilliant cut sets smaller, energetic facets across the crown and pavilion while maintaining larger, elegant planes that allow the vivid blue to breathe. The result is a face up view that glows with saturated color, and a profile that reveals a precise pavilion depth and an excellent polish that allows light to enter and exit with minimal obstruction. We note that this sapphire has a clarity grade of very slightly included evaluated at eye level, which means that to the unaided eye it presents as clean, while natural internal characteristics remain visible under magnification. These tiny markers of origin do not diminish its beauty, they authenticate it. Enhancement is heat treated, a traditional and stable technique used to intensify the color and remove veiling, and it has been done with the respect and transparency that quality gemstones deserve.

What gives this sapphire its sparkle is a combination of material science and the artistry of cutting. Sapphire is corundum, aluminum oxide that crystallizes in a trigonal system to form a structure that is both incredibly hard and optically lively. Its refractive index is high compared to many gemstones, which means that light is bent strongly as it enters and exits the crystal, creating brightness and return. The mixed brilliant cut leverages this physical property by arranging a constellation of triangular and kite shaped crown facets above a series of well proportioned pavilion facets. Each facet becomes a miniature mirror, sending light inward to be dispersed and then returned as flashes of brightness. In addition, this sapphire displays pleochroism, the ability to show different intensities of blue from different angles, which a skilled cutter considers when orienting the stone. The vivid color intensity you see is a result of trace elements hosted in the crystal lattice and the way that the internal structure absorbs and transmits particular wavelengths of light. The excellent polish removes surface distortion, allowing that sharp, crisp scintillation that is so satisfying to the eye. Even the very slight inclusions contribute subtly to its personality, scattering highlights at close view in a way that confirms the gem s natural origin.

Imagine this sapphire set at the center of a ring or pendant where its story continues with a maker s touch. The cushion silhouette plays beautifully with both modern and classical mountings, and the dimensions of 7.94 by 7.11 by 4.25 millimeters offer a balanced look on hand or at the throat. Paired with platinum, white gold, or warm yellow gold, the vivid blue will assert itself while harmonizing with the metal s tone. For a customer seeking a piece steeped in provenance, the fact that this gem is from Ceylon matters. These stones are sought for their luminous saturated blues that seem to possess a light from within. When you choose a sapphire from The Natural Sapphire Company you choose a gem that has been ethically sourced, expertly evaluated, and thoughtfully presented. We disclose that this sapphire is heat treated, and we provide the clarity grading of very slightly included evaluated at eye level, along with the carat weight of 2.40 carat and the measurements of 7.94 by 7.11 by 4.25 millimeters. Our cutters and gemologists have worked to preserve the integrity and maximize the beauty of this crystal, resulting in a stone whose sparkle is as much a product of nature as of human care. This is not merely an object, it is an heirloom in potential, ready to begin a new chapter in a piece that will be cherished for generations.
