Product description

This piece is a transparent oval purplish blue sapphire, weighing 2.17 carats, with precise dimensions of 8.92 by 6.96 by 4.39 millimeters, originating from Madagascar, untreated and unheated, clarity graded slightly included with the evaluation made at eye level, color described as intense in overall saturation, and an excellent polish that delivers crisp facet planes. The cutting style is faceted, executed as a mixed brilliant cut, and the proportions have been calibrated to balance color saturation with maximum light return. The length to width ratio is approximately 1.28, producing an elegant oval outline that favors both finger orientation and visual symmetry. The pavilion depth of 4.39 millimeters represents approximately 55 percent of the average diameter, a proportion that supports strong internal reflection while maintaining enough crown height to facilitate scintillation across the upper surface.

The geometric faceting is the technical heart of the stone, and the mixed brilliant schema here combines a faceted crown dominated by star and kite facets with a pavilion arranged in a series of mains and halves that terminate in a well centered culet area. The cutter retained a moderate table facet to permit a broad window for color assessment, while preserving a controlled crown angle aimed at reflecting light into the eye rather than leaking it through the girdle. The oval outline necessitates careful alignment of facet junctions along the long axis to prevent bow tie effect, and in this example the pavilion facet angles and the crown facet proportions have been tuned to minimize central darkening, producing an even play of light across the table. The symmetry and facet polish work together to create sharp facet junctions that act as multiple mirrors, breaking incoming light into flashes of dispersed white brilliance and colored flashes that animate the purplish blue body color as the stone moves.

Optically the sapphire exhibits the classic corundum behavior, the high refractive index of the species serving to intensify both color and brilliance, while the very low birefringence preserves crisp facet reflections without double images. For reference the corundum refractive index band is approximately 1.762 to 1.770, and birefringence values are typically around 0.008 to 0.010, characteristics that support the strong light return observed in this cut. The intense color intensity of this example is modulated by the mixed brilliant geometry so that hue and tone remain lively under daylight and incandescent sources, the purplish blue hue demonstrating attractive saturation without appearing overly dark. The slightly included clarity grade, assessed at eye level, indicates small internal characteristics that do not materially disrupt the optical performance, and because the stone is unenhanced the inclusions provide natural fingerprints of origin while permitting transparent light paths through the pavilion facets.

From a setting and craftsmanship perspective this sapphire is a versatile candidate for bespoke mounting, whether the intent is to showcase maximum light play or to emphasize the vivid natural color. For greatest scintillation an open gallery, low bezel, or four prong head will permit light to enter and exit freely through the crown and pavilion facets, while a subtle halo of small brilliant cut accents will amplify perceived size and enhance perimeter sparkle without competing with the stone s inherent geometry. For collectors and connoisseurs who prioritize natural material and precise cutting, this Madagascar sapphire offers an excellent balance of technical proportions, mixed brilliant faceting, intense color, and untreated provenance. The Natural Sapphire Company presents this piece with the assurance of expert cutting assessment and detailed documentation, making it a strong choice for a signature ring, refined pendant, or as a collectible gem for further custom work.
