Product description

This specimen is a transparent 2.14 carat cushion shape blue sapphire, with exact dimensions of 7.12 x 7.12 x 4.70 mm, presented by The Natural Sapphire Company. The stone has been fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut, combining a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown with a modified pavilion architecture to maximize both light return and scintillation. Clarity is graded as very slightly included at eye level, meaning the stone reads clean to most observers while retaining minute internal characteristics that confirm natural formation. Color intensity is described as intense, producing a saturated blue that remains lively through the table and pavilion, and the polish is excellent, yielding crisp facet junctions and mirror like facet planes. Enhancement is heat treatment, a stable and widely accepted standard for corundum that enhances tone and saturation without compromising structural integrity. Origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a source known for producing lively and vividly hued sapphires, and the cutter has optimized the proportions to deliver a compelling balance of depth and brilliance for the weight.

From a gemological standpoint this sapphire benefits from the inherent optical properties of corundum. Corundum exhibits a refractive index in the range of approximately 1.762 to 1.770, and a birefringence on the order of 0.008 to 0.010, values that translate into a high index of refraction and the potential for strong light return when faceting geometry is well executed. Dispersion in corundum is modest, about 0.018, so the dominant visual effect is white light return and crisp scintillation rather than pronounced fire. The mixed brilliant cut on this cushion uses a relatively shallow crown and a pavilion plan that channels light back through the table as flashes of blue and white, producing a fine balance between broad luminosity and fine pinpoint scintillation. The excellent polish accentuates the refractive properties, maintaining sharp facet reflections and minimizing light scattering at the surface. Pleochroism in blue sapphires can be subtle to moderate, and in this Ceylon origin example the cutter has oriented the stone to present the most favorable blue face up, thereby reducing color zoning and preserving a uniform visual field.

When compared to other gemstones within its category, this Ceylon sapphire demonstrates a distinctive reflective character. Relative to classic Kashmir sapphires, which are prized for a dense, velvety saturation and a diffusion of light produced by micro silk, this stone exhibits higher brilliance and more defined facet reflections, producing an effect that reads as lively and crystalline rather than opalescent. Against Burmese sapphires, which can show deep royal saturation and sometimes a strong fluorescence related lift in apparent brightness, the present Ceylon piece maintains an intense but more transparent medium, giving it superior transparency and a cleaner window through the table. Compared to sapphires from Madagascar and Australia, which can vary widely in tone and inclusion types, this example stands out for its combination of intense hue and eye level clarity. When contrasted with other blue gem species, such as spinel and tanzanite, the sapphire displays inherently greater brilliance due to corundums higher refractive index. Spinel typically reads with a glassy luster and lower light return, while tanzanite exhibits pronounced pleochroism that can shift color dramatically off axis, reducing the uniform blue face up. In practical terms the present sapphire offers a superior balance of color saturation, transparency, and facet defined brilliance within the blue gem category.

From a craftsmanship and setting perspective the mixed brilliant cushion is especially adaptable for fine jewelry applications where reflective performance is paramount. The cutter has maintained proportional table dimensions and a well executed girdle thickness to support secure mounting without sacrificing optical performance, while the pavilion facet design concentrates light return to create lively scintillation under movement. For settings that emphasize brilliance and visual size, an open gallery and a white metal mounting will accentuate the stone s contrast and allow light to enter and reflect freely. A halo of small brilliant cut diamonds can increase apparent brightness through contrast without overwhelming the sapphire s intense blue. Heat treatment is stable under normal wear conditions and does not affect hardness, corundum retaining its position as second only to diamond on the Mohs scale with a hardness of 9, making it suitable for daily wear when set with standard care. The Natural Sapphire Company provides a full description and provenance for this Ceylon sapphire, and our team can advise on mounting options and grading documentation to match the technical attributes of the stone to the intended jewelry design and wear profile.
