Product description

This transparent 2.11 carat oval greenish blue sapphire from Madagascar is a technically refined collector grade stone offered by The Natural Sapphire Company, weighing 2.11 carats, with dimensions of 7.50 by 6.69 by 5.23 millimeters. The oval proportions produce a length to width ratio of approximately 1.12, creating a near equidimensional outline that reads as classic rather than overly elongated, and the overall depth measures approximately 73.7 percent when calculated against the mean diameter. The cutter elected a mixed brilliant cut to balance brightness and color depth, using a brilliant style crown to promote scintillation, combined with a modified pavilion architecture to concentrate light return and preserve color saturation. The table and crown facets are proportioned to maximize face up brilliance while the pavilion angles are deliberately deep to avoid windowing and to force light through the material, producing an intense color intensity across the table. Clarity is graded very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, meaning that minor internal features are present but do not materially reduce transparency or light performance to the naked eye, and the gem presents an excellent polish, with clean facet junctions and consistent facet symmetry that indicate careful lapidary control.

Color is a key technical attribute of this piece, the tone sits in the mid to slightly dark range with intense saturation that yields a rich greenish blue appearance, and the mixed cutting strategy enhances the stone’s body color while allowing flashes of lighter blue to appear with movement. The green component is subtle yet stable, distributed evenly rather than localized, which reflects homogeneity in the rough and conscientious orientation during cutting, and the transparency permits internal light paths to present strong color uniformity without significant zoning. Corundum pleochroism can be evident in sapphires with greenish blue chemistry, and in this example the pavilion geometry was optimized to manage pleochroic axes so that the dominant face up color remains consistent under common viewing angles. The very slightly included clarity grade suggests that typical inclusions are fine needles or pinpoint crystals placed in noncritical light paths, and the excellent polish minimizes surface diffusion of light loss, resulting in crisp facet reflections and lively scintillation. Because the material is unenhanced, the color, clarity, and optical behavior are wholly natural, providing an authentic corundum character for connoisseurs who prioritize untreated material.

On the Mohs hardness scale this Madagascar sapphire rates nine, reflecting its membership in the corundum mineral class, and this places it immediately below diamond, which is ten, while notably harder than topaz at eight, and quartz at seven, so the gemstone offers excellent resistance to scratching under normal daily conditions. Beyond surface hardness, corundum displays favorable toughness due to the absence of true cleavage, meaning the stone resists splitting along cleavage planes, though caution is advised against sharp, localized impacts on facet junctions or the girdle that can induce chips, particularly given the relatively deep pavilion geometry of this cut. For settings and long term durability we recommend protective mounting strategies for patrons who plan continuous wear, such as low profile bezels or well seated prong configurations that shield the girdle and culet, and select metal choices and seat depths that minimize direct edge exposure. As this sapphire is natural and unheated, originating in Madagascar, it offers both aesthetic merit and technical resilience, and our gemological team at The Natural Sapphire Company can provide additional technical data and tailored mounting recommendations to ensure that the cutting proportions, color dynamics, and hardness characteristics of this gem are preserved in the final jewelry setting.
