Product description

This 2.01 carat oval violet sapphire presents as a transparent gem, with precise dimensions of 7.91 by 6.42 by 4.94 millimeters, and an overall presence that balances table face and girdle circumference. The stone was cut into a mixed brilliant style, combining a brilliant crown with a pavilion that optimizes light return, and it carries a clarity grade of slightly included when evaluated at eye level. Color is classified as medium intensity, a violet hue that displays evenness across the table and a modest internal fluorescence under different lighting, consistent with quality material from Ceylon Sri Lanka. There is no enhancement, which preserves natural pleochroism and crystal structure, and the polish is excellent, producing clean facet junctions and sharp facet mirrors that allow the mixed brilliant layout to scintillate without diffusion. The provenance from Ceylon contributes to the stone character, often yielding a delicate violet saturation that can shift toward blue or purple depending on viewing angle and mounting design, and collectors who favor natural, untreated material will value the combination of origin, clarity, and unstated but evident cutting decisions.

From a cutting and craft perspective the mixed brilliant approach in this oval has been executed to favor light performance and wearability, the crown facets are proportioned to open the stone visually while the smaller step influenced elements in the pavilion control return angles and contrast patterning. The table size and crown heights appear calibrated so that the table presents a lively sparkle, while the pavilion depth supports focused return of light to the observer rather than leakage into the girdle, and the overall depth is approximately sixty nine percent of the average diameter, a proportion that enhances perceived size face up while preserving good brilliance. Facet symmetry is consistent across the crown and pavilion, with balanced facet junctions that minimize windowing and produce even scintillation arrays when the stone is rotated, and the excellent polish enhances optical performance by reducing surface diffusion, increasing contrast, and clarifying internal characteristics. Slight inclusions observed at eye level sit within the crystal plane and do not fracture the facet junctions, they are stable and are not indicative of clarity enhancements, this supports both the visual appeal and the integrity of the gem as a candidate for classic prong settings, bezel arrangements, or more contemporary invisible style mounts where a stable pavilion and predictable light behavior are required.

In terms of durability and everyday use the material is corundum, and it rates nine on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, which positions it directly below diamond at ten and well above commonly encountered jewelry materials such as topaz at eight and quartz at seven, this hardness confers excellent resistance to abrasion and scratching in normal wear. The toughness of sapphire combined with the competent cutting and excellent polish means the stone will withstand routine wear in engagement ring environments and high contact pieces when set with appropriate protection for the girdle and culet, however mechanical shock can still cause cleavage or chip risk to any faceted gemstone, therefore recommended mounting strategies include secure prong configurations or partial bezel protection to safeguard the girdle and pavilion edge without compromising the face up light performance. At The Natural Sapphire Company we evaluate each stone for cutting proportions and inclusion characteristics to advise on optimal setting choices, this specimen is particularly suited to designs that showcase its medium violet saturation and mixed brilliant scintillation, and we can provide further imaging under directional light and setting mockups to demonstrate face up appearance and finger scale.
