Product description

This 1.98 carat sapphire presents as a transparent asscher cut octagon, with dimensions approximately 6.52 by 6.34 by 5.11 mm. The stone exhibits a bluish green hue, with vivid color intensity, and an assessed clarity grade of very very slightly included at eye level. The cut is a classical asscher style, producing broad step facets and a pronounced pavilion that emphasizes internal clarity and color depth. The polish is excellent, contributing to crisp facet junctions and clean reflections, and the stone carries no enhancement, originating from Madagascar. As a corundum, it benefits from a hardness of nine on the Mohs scale, providing strong resistance to abrasion for regular wear, while its specific gravity and refractive properties deliver a distinct balance of brilliance and color saturation in faceted presentation.

The bluish green hue of this Madagascar sapphire sits between several well known regional characteristics, with a tone and saturation that merit comparison to stones from Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Burma, Australia, and Montana. Compared with classic Kashmir sapphires, which are renowned for a velvety cornflower blue and a softer, more muted tone, this stone shows a perceptible green component and a more vivid saturation. Versus Sri Lankan examples, especially those described as Ceylon blue, the Madagascar bluish green here is notably richer in green content and carries a deeper tone, whereas Ceylon material frequently appears lighter and brighter with a more pronounced pure blue appearance. When set against Burmese sapphires, which can deliver a dense royal blue with strong saturation, this stone reads as cooler and greener, with a clarity and transparency that differs from the typically intense, sometimes silky, blues originating from that region.

Further comparison to Australian and Montana material helps to clarify the stone’s position within the spectrum of blue green sapphires. Australian sapphires often present with darker, inky blue green tones and a heavier body color, whereas Montana sapphires tend toward lighter, more teal expressions with a steely or pastel quality. The Madagascar example under description offers a middle ground, it is more vivid and saturated than most Montana sapphires, and less inky and more luminous than many Australian stones. The asscher cut accentuates this position by presenting broad, flat facets that allow the eye to read the color in planes, providing a vivid, consistent bluish green face up, while also showing subtle depth and windowing in certain light angles. The absence of enhancement maintains the integrity of the natural hue and tone, enabling direct comparison to these famous localities without confounding treatment effects.

From a practical and gemological perspective, the combination of asscher cut, very very slightly included clarity at eye level, and excellent polish results in a stone that balances optical performance with durable everyday suitability. The stone’s dimensions and near two carat weight give it presence in calibrated settings, while the step facet geometry of the asscher cut favors clean, architectural settings that respect its octagonal silhouette. Color will be read slightly differently depending on mounting metal and surrounding accents, as warmer metals may enhance the green component and cooler metals may emphasize the blue, nonetheless the inherent vivid bluish green and untreated origin will remain the defining attributes. This sapphire is offered by The Natural Sapphire Company as a natural, unenhanced Madagascar sapphire, and its combination of color, clarity, and cut offers a distinct and objectively describable profile that can be compared directly to the well documented characteristics of Kashmir, Sri Lanka, Burma, Australia, and Montana sourced material.
