From the riverbeds of Ceylon Sri Lanka to the quiet bench of our master cutter, this greenish blue sapphire began its story in an ancient landscape shaped by monsoon rains and slow moving streams. Miners working traditional pits and artisanal alluvial gravels recovered rough crystals that had formed millions of years ago under heat and pressure deep in the earth. This particular sapphire found its way from those gravel beds into the hands of local gem traders who recognized its potential, and then onward to a cutting studio where a decision was made to emphasize depth of color and lively sparkle. At The Natural Sapphire Company we honor that journey by tracing provenance with care, by documenting origin and enhancement details, and by ensuring that each step from mine to market preserves the gem character and story that make Ceylon sapphires so beloved.
At the cutting table the rough was carefully evaluated, and the cutter chose a cushion shape to balance the stone proportions with maximum brilliance. The resulting 1.93 carat cushion shape measures 6.59 x 6.33 x 5.19 mm, and it bears a mixed brilliant cut that combines step facets and brilliant facets to create depth and scintillation. Its clarity is graded very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, which means the gem is transparent and clean to most observers, with natural internal features that attest to its origin. The color reads as greenish blue with a dark color intensity, a hue that shifts subtly in different lights, revealing teal and forest blue notes. The polish is excellent, a mirror like finish on the facets that allows light to dance across the table and crown. Enhancement is heat treated, a common and stable enhancement used to bring out the true color within Ceylon sapphires while preserving natural beauty.
When we imagine this sapphire set into a custom piece we start with the stone as the protagonist, then select companions that will tell the rest of the story. For a timeless engagement ring a halo of small brilliant white diamonds will frame the cushion face, lifting the dark greenish blue and creating contrast that increases perceived size and fire. Surrounding the center with fine F versus G color diamonds in a pavé band will add continuous sparkle, while a platinum or 18 karat white gold setting will keep the presentation cool and contemporary, allowing the teal flashes to sing. For a vintage inspired look consider warm metals, rose gold or 18 karat yellow gold, which bring out the green undertones and add a soft romantic glow, especially when paired with small champagne diamonds or rose cut diamonds placed in scalloped bezels around the center stone.
Beyond white diamonds other gemstones offer beautiful companions that harmonize with this sapphire. Bright green tsavorite garnets or demantoid garnets echo the green facets, creating a botanical palette that feels fresh and modern. Delicate light pink sapphires or padparadscha tone sapphires add a feminine contrast that highlights the blue component and produces a lively interplay of color. For a bold cocktail ring, consider pairing the center sapphire with trapeze or baguette cut accent stones in deep blue sapphires, which will intensify the jewel like effect and create a unified color field. As a pendant the stone can be set low in a bezel that protects the girdle and allows the cushion face to sit close to the skin, while a single accent diamond above the bale will add a drop of fire that catches the eye when worn.
When you commission a custom piece from The Natural Sapphire Company our process respects both the gem story and your personal vision. We begin with detailed images and measurements of the 1.93 carat cushion sapphire, and we discuss metal choices, side stones, and setting styles that will best showcase the dark greenish blue hue and the excellent polish. Our gemologists will review clarity and enhancement details with you, ensuring that the heat treated origin is documented, and our designers will produce sketches that map out prong placement and pavilion depth so that light performance is maximized. The final jewel will not only reflect the geology and culture of Ceylon, but also your own narrative, a heirloom ready to continue the journey that began in the rivers of Sri Lanka.
