Product description

From the moment a tiny speck of aluminum and oxygen began its slow crystal dance deep within the ancient terrains of Ceylon, a story of time and pressure began that would end with this exquisite 1.61 carat violet sapphire, a jewel that carries the whispers of Sri Lanka in every facet. Mined from the storied alluvial gravels that have produced some of the world’s most beloved sapphires, this stone started life as a perfect lattice of corundum, its atoms arranged in a trigonal symmetry that gives sapphires their remarkable rigidity and optical character. Over millions of years, trace elements nudged that lattice toward a distinctive violet hue, and skilled hands in the region carefully recovered the rough with respect for the land and an eye for potential. At The Natural Sapphire Company we cherish that provenance, because a sapphire from Ceylon brings more than color, it brings history, and this gem’s intense color intensity is the living proof of that heritage.

The transformation from rough to the finished 6.54 x 6.52 x 4.46 mm round faceted gem was a collaboration between nature and master cutters, a collaboration designed to reveal the sapphire’s inner fire. The mixed brilliant cut chosen for this stone combines the light gathering efficiency of a brilliant facet arrangement with the controlled, elegant planes that emphasize color depth, producing a play of light that few cuts can match. What truly sets its sparkle apart is the sapphire’s intrinsic optical structure, its high refractive index which bends and returns light with a lively brilliance, and its low but meaningful birefringence which adds depth without blurring. The clarity grade of very very slightly included evaluated at eye level means the crystal is remarkably transparent, allowing light to travel through unobstructed, to reflect off precisely angled facets, and to scatter into countless tiny flashes of scintillation. The excellent polish is the final touch, smoothing facet junctions so that light meets glass with minimal resistance, and yielding a surface that flashes pure, focused points of light as the gem moves.

This sapphire’s violet personality is intensified and stabilized through careful heat treatment, a traditional and widely accepted practice that enhances color while preserving the gem’s natural integrity. The heat process unlocked the gem’s latent hue, drawing out an intense spectrum of violet that sits between royal and mysterious, a color that reads differently in morning and evening light, and that invites admiration without overpowering the wearer. In practical terms, the mixed brilliant cut interacts with the gem’s optical constants to produce a balance of brilliance, contrast, and color saturation, maximizing light return while showcasing the stone’s rich tone. At 1.61 carats and with its compact round dimensions, the sapphire offers a remarkable presence for its size, presenting bold color and lively sparkle in a format that sits elegantly in a ring, pendant, or heirloom piece.

When you hold this sapphire, you are holding the end point of a journey that began in the geological past and passed through human hands dedicated to revealing beauty. The Natural Sapphire Company presents this 1.61 carat round violet sapphire as a story set in stone, a narrative of formation in Ceylon, of thoughtful recovery, of precise cutting, and of finishing that honors the gem’s natural gifts. Its intense color, very very slightly included clarity at eye level, mixed brilliant faceting, and excellent polish combine with the inherent optical power of corundum to create a sparkle that is difficult to match. For someone who seeks a gem with soul, provenance, and the kind of light that catches attention without shouting for it, this sapphire offers a rare and elegant solution.
