Product description

This gem is a translucent 1.58 carat round greyish blue star sapphire, measuring 6.66 x 6.67 x 3.40 mm, presented in a traditional cabochon form that emphasizes asterism and surface luster. The shape is effectively circular, with a high domed profile chosen to optimize star visibility, and the finish is an excellent polish that delivers clean light return across the dome. Clarity is evaluated as slightly included at eye level, consistent with natural rutile needle patterns that contribute to the star effect. Color is characterized as medium intensity, a cool greyish blue body tone that balances darkness for contrast with sufficient translucency to allow the star to form distinctly under a single point light source. No enhancement has been performed, and the origin is Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a provenance that carries a long tradition of fine sapphire material. The Natural Sapphire Company sourced and selected this piece for its balance of natural asterism, intact surface condition, and untreated authenticity.

From a gemological perspective the asterism in this sapphire is a product of oriented needle like inclusions, principally rutile, arranged in intersecting planes. The cutting approach for a star sapphire is fundamentally different from faceted cutting, because the cutter works to align the growth axes and inclusion planes so that reflected light concentrates into a multi ray star that appears at the dome apex. This specimen exhibits a coherent star line when illuminated with a small bright light placed directly above the dome, and the star translates smoothly with movement of the light or stone, indicating good internal alignment of the inclusion planes. The cabochon apex has been rounded to a consistent curvature, which is essential to produce a centered six rayed star rather than a diffuse or multiple star effect. The polish quality is critical for star sapphires because surface microabrasions scatter light and soften the star, and the excellent polish on this piece preserves the sharp contrast between the star band and the surrounding body color.

Careful inspection shows the slightly included clarity grade results from fine oriented needle structures and a few internal feathers that are stable and do not compromise durability for typical jewelry use. At the specified dimensions and 1.58 carat weight the stone is compact, making it well suited for rings, pendants, or small brooches where the star can be oriented for maximum impact. The medium color intensity provides a neutral backdrop, with greyish blue tonality that reads cool under daylight and takes on a deeper tone under incandescent lighting. In settings, a low bezel or partial bezel is recommended to allow the dome to interact with light, and to provide protection for the rounded profile. Minimal prong work can be used if the design language requires visible metal, however for star alignment and visual stability a bezel that allows the star to remain unobstructed will typically yield the most effective presentation. When mounted, the star will be most apparent under focused overhead light, and for daily wear the excellent polish aids in resisting surface abrasion.

Historically Ceylon sapphires have been prized for both their gemological quality and their cultural roles, and this small round star sapphire sits within that long heritage. In South Asian and Sri Lankan contexts star sapphires were often set into ritual jewelry, talismans, or worn as protective stones aligned with astrological practices, where the star was thought to focus intent and confer clarity to the wearer. European and Middle Eastern traditions also valued star sapphires in signet like mounts and devotional pieces, using the central star as a focal point in ornamental metalwork. The Natural Sapphire Company offers this untreated Ceylon piece as an example of that continuity, combining traditional aesthetic function with modern gemological rigor. We can provide guidance on mounting to preserve star orientation, and on certification and appraisal to document origin and lack of enhancement for collectors and connoisseurs. For care we recommend gentle cleaning with warm water, a mild detergent, and a soft brush, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners due to internal inclusions, and storing the stone separately to prevent surface abrasion. For bespoke settings and further technical consultation please contact The Natural Sapphire Company, where our experience in sourcing, grading, and mounting natural star sapphires can support a precise and historically informed result.
