Product description

This specimen is a transparent 1.09 carat oval blue sapphire, with calibrated dimensions of 7.24 by 5.33 by 3.46 mm, and a length to width ratio of approximately 1.36, an ideal proportion for an elegant oval silhouette. The total depth of 3.46 mm corresponds to an approximate depth of 55 percent when referenced to the average of the length and width, a proportion that balances face up spread with sufficient pavilion volume to concentrate color. The stone is fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut, combining a brilliant faceted crown with a more controlled pavilion architecture to both enhance scintillation and preserve color saturation. At eye level the clarity is graded as very very slightly included, an assessment which means inclusions are minimal and do not detract from the visual performance of the gem, while the polish is evaluated as excellent, giving crisp facet junctions and unhindered light transmission. Enhancement is heat treatment, a stable and widely accepted treatment that refines color and reduces the visibility of certain inclusions without introducing foreign filling substances. The origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a source renowned for producing sapphires with lively, intense blue tones and excellent crystalline quality, and this piece exhibits the hallmark vivacity associated with that provenance.

From a faceting and optical engineering perspective the mixed brilliant cut executed on this oval is specifically chosen to maximize optical return in a naturally colored material. The brilliant style crown creates numerous small facets that break incident light into a lively scintillation pattern which is effective at catching and releasing light across the face of the stone, while the pavilion geometry has been trimmed to retain color concentration and to prevent light leakage, resulting in a saturated face up tone without appearing dark. The 1.36 proportion ensures the table and crown angles work in concert to produce even light distribution across the length of the oval, minimizing the common issues of bow tie or uneven contrast bands when well proportioned. The very very slightly included clarity grade indicates that inclusions are generally sub millimeter and located in positions that do not interrupt facet symmetry, and the excellent polish contributes to a high index of refraction effect at the facet planes providing strong contrast between bright and dark facets. For settings the stone will present as a lively, intensely colored center with well controlled light performance, and the dimensions favor a comfortable bezel or prong mounting that maintains the integrity of the cut while showing optimal face up area.

Geologically and gemologically this sapphire carries the chemical and structural fingerprints of natural Ceylon corundum, the blue hue arising principally from trace iron and titanium substituting in the crystal lattice. Sri Lankan sapphires often display a bright, medium to intense tone with good saturation, traits that are evident here in the intense color intensity assessment, and natural inclusions can act as microscopic signatures that attest to origin and formation history. Heat treatment in this context is a controlled thermal process that modifies the internal lattice and rutile arrays to improve transparency and enhance homogeneity of color, it does not constitute a doping with foreign elements, and when properly documented it remains a preferred enhancement for improving the visual quality of natural material. The stone also benefits from the inherent durability of corundum, rated nine on the Mohs scale, which makes it suitable for everyday wear in a wide range of mounting designs while retaining polish and facet integrity over time.

When comparing a natural Ceylon sapphire of this specification to lab grown alternatives it is important to evaluate both measurable and qualitative differences. Lab grown sapphires are chemically and physically corundum, and they can be produced with exceptional clarity and uniform color, often at a lower price per carat, and with predictable availability. However natural stones like this 1.09 carat Ceylon sapphire offer provenance, geologic individuality, and a pattern of internal features that no two natural crystals replicate, characteristics that contribute to long term desirability and collectability. Natural origin stones from recognized locales are also subject to market dynamics that can support resale value and emotional value rooted in origin and rarity, factors that many knowledgeable buyers prioritize. At The Natural Sapphire Company we emphasize accurate documentation and origin disclosure, and we provide detailed imagery and gemological evaluation so that buyers understand the nature of heat treatment and the specific visual characteristics of each stone. For clients seeking a balance of technical excellence and natural rarity this sapphire represents a compelling option, combining precise cutting choices, superior polish, an intense Ceylon blue, and the stable enhancement of heat treatment, all supported by provenance and gemological transparency.
