Product description

From the mossy alluvial terraces and ancient metamorphic outcrops of Ceylon Sri Lanka this little blue sapphire began its life deep within the earth where heat and pressure coaxed aluminum rich minerals into the hard, enduring crystal we know as corundum. Centuries of geological patience yielded a rough stone that carried the quiet lightness of the island skies, and then hands guided by local knowledge and modern gemological standards removed its outer skin. At The Natural Sapphire Company we trace each step of that journey, and this 0.35 carat cushion shaped blue sapphire, measuring 4.77 by 3.54 by 2.33 millimeters, arrived to our workshop free of treatments, natural and whole. The miners who first uncovered it in Ceylon recognized a gentle blue tone, a color that in local tradition evokes the cool calm of monsoon clouds and the deep heritage of gemstones traded along ancient routes. That human story is stitched into the gem, from the river beds where it was sorted, through the hands that preformed it, to the precise shaping by a cutter who chose a mixed brilliant cut to celebrate both the sapphire nature and the demand for scintillating life in small stones.

The way this sapphire sparkles is a conversation between elemental chemistry and masterful cutting, a dialogue that gives it an optical voice unlike many other gems. Corundum has a high refractive index, and that means light that enters the gem is bent strongly, creating intense internal reflections that a skilled cutter can harness. The mixed brilliant cut used on this cushion form balances a faceted crown that returns white light with a pavilion geometry that sends flashes of blue and violet back to the viewer, producing both brilliance and lively scintillation. This sapphire displays the subtle pleochroism typical of corundum, so that when you tilt it the color mood shifts ever so slightly, revealing cooler and warmer blue notes as angles change. With a light color intensity, those shifts are delicate rather than dramatic, offering a refined, ethereal blue that sits between daytime freshness and evening cool. The clarity grade is very very slightly included evaluated at eye level, and these tiny internal features are so minor that they do not interrupt the path of light through the stone. Combined with an excellent polish, every facet edge is clean and smooth, allowing light to dance across the pavilion facets and refract into the crown, producing pinpoint flashes and broad flashes in equal measure. Even though sapphires have lower dispersion than some other gemstones, the high refractive index and the careful distribution of facets in this mixed brilliant cushion form create a sparkle that is all its own, a composed, lively brightness that can read as classic or contemporary depending on the setting.

In the jeweler workshop the stone is small yet extraordinarily expressive, a 0.35 carat blue heart that fits the modern desire for understated elegance with strong presence. Its cushion outline softens the geometry when set as a solitaire, while the mixed brilliant pattern gives enough fire to catch attention at a glance, as seen in our hand view photographs where the gem sits with quiet authority on a finger. Because this piece is unheated and untreated, it carries the full narrative of its origin, and at The Natural Sapphire Company we provide detailed provenance so you may wear not just a gem, but a story. Consider using it as the centerpiece of a fine, minimal ring that frames its lightness with warm metal, or as an accent stone paired with a warmer center gem where its cool blue will provide contrast and balance. The dimensions of 4.77 by 3.54 by 2.33 millimeters and the cushion shape make it versatile for delicate halo settings, bezel mounts that celebrate its symmetry, or a three stone arrangement that draws the eye along a graceful line.

Owning this sapphire means carrying a piece of Ceylon geology and artisan history with you, a gem shaped by elemental time and refined by human skill, kept pure, and presented with care. The Natural Sapphire Company stands behind its natural state and its provenance, offering you a sapphire that is honest, luminous, and rich in story. If you seek a jewel that whispers of tropical rains and patient formation, that offers a sparkle born of crystalline structure and cutting expertise, this 0.35 carat cushion blue sapphire is a rare ally, small in scale, profound in presence.
