From the riverbeds of Ceylon Sri Lanka to the careful hands in our workshop, these star sapphires carry a story of time and tenderness. Formed deep within metamorphic rock over millions of years, they gathered silken rutile needles that became the secret of their star, a phenomenon known as asterism. Miners in Sri Lanka recognized the subtle grey tone and translucent glow, and these two stones were set aside for their complementary size and character. At The Natural Sapphire Company we selected them not only for their natural star effect but for the way each gem reflects its own history. The pair weigh 2.73 carats and 3.29 carats respectively, and their oval silhouettes read as gentle moons, each presenting a centered star that appears to glide across the surface as light moves. Their origin in Ceylon Sri Lanka gives them a cultural resonance, a lineage tied to centuries of gem cutting and jewelry traditions in the island nation, and no enhancement has been applied, preserving the integrity of their natural formation.
In the cutting room the decision to fashion them as cabochons was deliberate, a choice that honors their internal structure and amplifies the six ray star, the result of aligned rutile inclusions. The first measures 9.70 by 7.89 by 3.66 millimeters, the second measures 9.78 by 8.01 by 4.12 millimeters, each shaped and polished to an excellent finish that allows the star to read cleanly against a medium color intensity body tone. Their clarity grade is slightly included evaluated at eye level, which is part of what gives these gems personality, the natural inclusions acting as a map of their geological journey. Together they form a matched pair that is rare to find in natural, untreated material, making them ideal for a pair of earrings or a coordinating set that celebrates symmetry and natural variation. As a member of our team at The Natural Sapphire Company I invite you to imagine these sapphires set in a simple bezel to focus on the star, or in a halo to enhance their presence, and I am available to discuss settings, provenance documentation, and custom design possibilities to ensure these Ceylon stars become a piece that carries both beauty and story.
