Product description

This 0.85 carat cushion shaped purple sapphire presents as a compact, transparent specimen with precise dimensions of 5.82 x 4.47 x 3.66 mm, and a mixed brilliant cut that marries brilliant crown faceting with a subtly modified pavilion structure to balance scintillation and color depth. The mixed brilliant architecture yields a larger, well proportioned table and a crown facet scheme that maximizes return of white light and pinpoint flashes, while the pavilion geometry concentrates color and sustains face up saturation despite the stone being graded with light color intensity. Measured depth relative to the average of the length and width is approximately 71 percent, a depth profile that is intentionally fuller than typical shallow cuts, and that supports a more saturated visual presence when mounted. Clarity is graded as very slightly included at eye level, meaning inclusions are minor in size and placement, they do not materially interrupt transparency or facet interaction, and they are often positioned in the pavilion or at facet junctions where they do not impede the primary light pathways. The polish is excellent, producing crisp facet junctions and clean facet planes that translate into high surface luster and effective light transfer to the observer. This sapphire has been heat treated, a stable and standard enhancement in corundum, applied to refine color distribution and to improve clarity by altering microscopic silk and fluid inclusion textures, and the piece is sourced from Montana, a provenance known for producing clean, pastel to medium toned sapphires with a distinct regional character.

When comparing brilliance and optical behavior to more commonly encountered gemstones, it helps to consider refractive index and dispersion values along with facet architecture. Corundum, the species that includes sapphire, has a refractive index near 1.76, which is substantially lower than diamond, therefore it produces less fire or spectral dispersion than diamond but it still delivers strong brilliance and a satiny luster due to its high crystalline clarity and excellent polishing. Against quartz varieties such as amethyst, which have refractive indices around 1.54, this Montana sapphire displays markedly superior brilliance, sharper facet reflections, and a more vivid interplay between light and color. The mixed brilliant cut employed in this cushion amplifies contrast and scintillation more than a typical step cut would, producing the lively flashes that buyers associate with high quality brilliants, while the pavilion depth and facet orientation intensify the purple hue in a way that a shallow cut could not. Additionally, purple sapphires exhibit pleochroism, a directional color variance, and the mixed brilliant faceting strategy reduces unwanted color shift by distributing color across multiple facets, allowing the stone to appear consistently purple from most viewing angles rather than fragmenting into competing tones.

From a craftsmanship and practical perspective this sapphire offers several technical advantages for discerning buyers and designers. The excellent polish and precise facet junctions indicate that the cutter prioritized light return and symmetry, optimizing crown angles and table size for the stone dimensions rather than simply preserving weight, which is evidenced by the attractive balance between face up presence and depth. The very slightly included clarity grade coupled with heat treatment results in a gem that is both visually clean and stable for daily wear when set in a protective mounting. The cushion shape and mixed brilliant faceting make this piece especially well suited to ring designs where center stone brilliance is paramount, and it will perform exceptionally in solitaire, halo, or three stone settings where the pavilion depth can be oriented to maximize face up intensity. Its Montana origin contributes a collectible aspect, as these sapphires are prized for their delicate regional color signatures, and at 0.85 carat the gem offers a premium balance of rarity and versatility. For clients who appreciate technical specifications and provenance, The Natural Sapphire Company can provide detailed imagery and viewing guidance to evaluate face up color, pleochroic behavior, and facet alignment prior to purchase, ensuring the stone integrates seamlessly into the desired design while delivering the refined optical properties that set it apart from more common gemstones.
