From the riverbeds of Madagascar to the lap of a master cutter, this heart shaped green sapphire carries a story that is both geological and human. Formed under immense pressure and time, the crystal was discovered in alluvial gravels that have produced some of the most characterful sapphires in the world. Careful sorting and selection revealed a clean, transparent rough with a medium intense green that changes subtly with each movement. At 1.07 carats, and measuring 5.24 by 6.39 by 4.37 millimeters, the stone was entrusted to a skilled lapidary who chose a mixed brilliant cut to balance sparkle with depth, and to emphasize the heart silhouette. The result is a gem with excellent polish, showing lively flashes from the crown and a pleasing, even tone through the pavilion. Evaluated at eye level the clarity is very very slightly included, and the sapphire has been heat treated to stabilize and enhance its natural color, a common and enduring practice that brings out the best in these Madagascan treasures.
