Product description

As a consultant for The Natural Sapphire Company, I am pleased to introduce this exceptional ring, centered on a transparent 1.52 carat pink sapphire cut in an elegant emerald configuration. The sapphire measures 7.71 by 5.66 by 3.44 millimeters, and presents medium color saturation with a bright, even pink tone that is characteristic of high quality Ceylon material. This stone has been evaluated as eye clean when observed at normal viewing distance, and exhibits an excellent polish that contributes to crisp facet junctions and a clean, gemlike luster. Importantly, this sapphire has received no enhancements, which means the color and clarity are entirely natural, and its provenance is documented as Ceylon Sri Lanka. The mounting is executed in 18K yellow gold, chosen to warm the pink hue and to provide a timeless, durable setting that will protect the stone while presenting it to its best advantage.

From a gemological perspective, there are several reasons this sapphire is appealing to an educated buyer. The emerald cut emphasizes the gem’s clarity and color in a way that brilliant cuts do not, relying on broad, step facets to reveal the stone’s internal character and to display an even color distribution. Eye clean clarity at this size indicates that inclusions do not interfere with face up appearance, a trait that is particularly desirable in an emerald cut where internal features can otherwise be more visible. The absence of any enhancement is significant, because many sapphires undergo heat treatment to improve color or clarity. Natural, unheated sapphires from Ceylon are less common in the market, and they often retain a brightness and color nuance that collectors and connoisseurs prize. The excellent polish and careful facet symmetry in this piece optimize light return and contribute to a crisp, refined table appearance that complements the gem’s natural color.

The ring is further detailed with white round natural diamonds as accent stones, used to frame and enhance the center sapphire. The larger accent diamonds weigh approximately 0.051 carats each, and the smaller accents weigh approximately 0.03 carats each. All accent diamonds are graded in the clarity range VS1 to VS2, and color grade F, a level that reads as near colorless to the trained eye. These diamond grades ensure bright, lively accents that provide scintillation without competing with the sapphire’s color. Placed in the warm embrace of 18K yellow gold, the F color grade remains visually white, while the VS clarity ensures minimal inclusions under magnification and no distraction to the naked eye. The design intent is to balance sparkle and hue, using high quality white diamonds to frame the pink center stone, accentuate the emerald cut lines, and add contrast against the gold setting, resulting in a composition that reads as both classic and refined.

When comparing this natural, untreated Ceylon sapphire to lab grown alternatives, there are clear distinctions to consider for a discerning buyer. Lab grown sapphires can offer uniform, vivid color, and typically command a lower price point because they are reproducible and abundant. Many lab grown stones display fewer inclusions and predictable optical properties, which appeals to customers seeking maximum color saturation at a value. However, lab grown material does not carry the same geological history or natural provenance as a Ceylon sapphire. Natural unheated sapphires like the one in this ring are formed over millions of years, incorporating trace element profiles and inclusion types that are unique and often used to verify origin. This natural origin, combined with the absence of enhancement, increases desirability among collectors and often contributes to stronger long term market perception. From a practical perspective, both natural and lab grown corundum share the same hardness and durability, and both will wear well when set in a durable metal such as 18K gold. For clients who prioritize documented origin, rarity, and the subtle character that natural inclusions provide, this unheated Ceylon pink sapphire represents a meaningful premium. For those whose priority is maximum color saturation at a lower initial cost, a lab grown alternative may be appropriate. At The Natural Sapphire Company, we can supply documentation regarding origin and treatment, and we welcome the opportunity to discuss these tradeoffs in detail so each client can make an informed decision that aligns with their values and collecting goals.
