Product description

Millions of years ago, deep within the crust of what is now Montana, this sapphire began its slow and exacting process of formation as molten, aluminum rich fluids percolated through fractures and pore spaces in host rock, cooling to permit the ordered crystallization of corundum, Al2O3. Trace concentrations of iron and titanium fluctuated in space and time during growth, yielding subtle zones of chromophore variation that manifest today as a bi color or parti distribution rather than a single homogenous hue. Local changes in redox conditions and temperature produced minute variations in oxidation state that favored the incorporation of different trace ion species into successive growth layers, and the result is a transparent crystal that records its environment in delicate shifts of color. Physical stresses and episodic fluid events produced elongated growth faces and occasional inclusions that served as markers of crystallographic history, while subsequent erosion and transport concentrated the crystals into placer deposits where their rounded outlines were preserved prior to human recovery.

When selecting a cutting strategy for this particular rough, the cutter prioritized retention of the characteristic parti color shift while maximizing optical performance, opting for an oval outline and a mixed brilliant faceting scheme that balances brilliance and color dispersion. The finished dimensions are precisely 5.46 by 3.70 by 2.50 millimeters, yielding a depth to average diameter ratio of approximately 54.5 percent, a proportion that promotes efficient light return for an oval geometry without overly flattening the pavilion. The mixed brilliant approach employs a brilliant style crown to produce lively face up scintillation and dispersion, combined with a pavilion configuration tuned to control internal reflection and minimize windowing, thereby allowing the light to interact with both the cool and warm color zones. Facet junctions have been calibrated to maintain symmetry across the oval outline, and facet proportions were chosen to emphasize color flow along the length of the stone rather than isolate it into discrete lobes, a subtlety that benefits parti sapphires where color transition is a defining characteristic.

Clarity characteristics were evaluated at eye level and reported as very very slightly included, an assessment that communicates the extremely minor nature of internal features to a discerning viewer. Under magnification, inclusions present as fine, well healed planes and occasional microscopic rutile or crystal inclusions that do not disrupt the optical pathway, and the cutting strategy intentionally positions these features away from primary light return axes. The gem has undergone standard heat treatment to stabilize and refine color zoning and to reduce microscopic silk that can soften brilliance, a controlled thermal process commonly applied to Montana sapphires to enhance color homogeneity while preserving the unique parti effect. The polish is excellent, with mirror finished facets and carefully controlled girdle thickness to facilitate secure setting without compromising visual proportions, and the overall result is a high clarity, transparent gem that exhibits crisp facet reflections and a clean, lively table window.

This offering from The Natural Sapphire Company is a 0.43 carat, transparent, oval shaped bi color or parti sapphire, faceted in a mixed brilliant cut with dimensions of 5.46 by 3.70 by 2.50 millimeters, a clarity evaluated as very very slightly included at eye level, light color intensity, excellent polish, heat treated enhancement, and Montana origin. For the technically minded buyer, the stone represents a considered balance between weight retention and optical optimization, the oval outline maximizing yield from the rough while the mixed brilliant faceting maximizes scintillation and color interaction. The modest depth percentage supports strong face up brightness, and the precise facet geometry ensures even light distribution across the bi color field, making this sapphire particularly well suited to settings that celebrate directional color play, such as east west rings, elongated halo designs, or open gallery mountings that allow light to penetrate from the pavilion. As with all pieces curated by The Natural Sapphire Company, documentation of origin and treatment is provided, and the cutting choices reflect both gemological respect for the material and an intent to present its intrinsic geological story to a knowledgeable collector or connoisseur.
