From the moment this blue sapphire left the alluvial soils of Ceylon it began a journey shaped by earth and hand. Mined in Sri Lanka where sapphires have been prized for centuries, the rough crystal carried the quiet history of its place of origin, and at The Natural Sapphire Company our cutters honored that lineage. We weighed and graded this stone at 2.91 carats and fashioned it into an elegant oval measuring 9.86 x 6.94 x 4.88 mm. The mixed brilliant cut was chosen to balance face up color and lively scintillation, while meticulous polishing revealed a vivid color intensity that glows under varied light. Clarity was evaluated as very slightly included at eye level, an honest sign of natural origin that does not detract from its visual purity. Heat treatment was applied as a stable and widely accepted enhancement to optimize tone and saturation, and the result is an exceptionally clean and vivid blue, with an excellent polish that allows light to travel through the stone and return as deep, velvety blue flashes.
When compared with other gemstones in its category this Ceylon sapphire stands out for the way it manages both color and light. Against Kashmir sapphires it shares a velvety allure but tends to present a brighter and more lively blue rather than the intense, powdery tone associated with Kashmir. Compared to Burmese sapphires this stone shows vivid saturation while offering slightly greater brilliance because the mixed brilliant facets create more scintillation and flash. Against other blue gems such as spinel and tanzanite it demonstrates superior durability and a denser, more consistent color. Tanzanite will show trichroic color shift and a softer violet blue, and spinel will often show higher transparency with different fire, but neither commonly matches the combination of surface luster and internal depth that a well cut Ceylon sapphire can deliver. The mixed brilliant cut on this oval maximizes light return and creates a dynamic play between flash and depth, making it ideal for settings where both sparkle and color are important. At The Natural Sapphire Company we present this stone as a piece of natural history, transformed into a wearable heirloom that connects the provenance of Ceylon to the careful hands that shaped it.
