Product description

From the mineral rich soils of Ceylon, a story began that would be shaped by time, heat, and the practiced hands of master cutters. Deep beneath the surface of Sri Lanka, corundum crystals slowly crystallized within pegmatites and metamorphic host rocks, absorbing trace elements that would one day impart the deep blue that collectors seek. This particular sapphire spent its infancy as part of that ancient geology, emerging as a fine transparent crystal with potential, a potential recognized by the experienced eye at The Natural Sapphire Company. The long history of Sri Lankan sapphires is woven into local lore and global gem trade alike, and this stone carries that lineage. When a gem this fine is chosen, it is not only for its color and clarity, but also for the way it seems to promise something beautiful once it is released from the rough. The Natural Sapphire Company guided this sapphire from the mine through careful selection, to the bench where decisions about orientation and cut would forever determine how it speaks to light.

The transformation from rough to a precise cushion shape involved choices that honored the crystal form while maximizing beauty. This is a transparent 2.58 carat cushion shape blue sapphire, with dimensions of 7.59 by 7.32 by 4.52 millimeters. It bears a mixed brilliant cut, a style that blends the scintillating fire of brilliant facets with stepped facets that deepen the color. Its clarity grade is very very slightly included as evaluated at eye level, which means the stone reads clean to the viewer while retaining natural character. The sapphire displays intense color intensity, a saturation that is vivid without being overpowering, and an excellent polish that produces crisp facet edges and a smooth, reflective surface. A measured heat treatment was applied to enhance the gem, a traditional and widely accepted process that gently intensifies hue and clarity, while preserving the stone natural charm. Each of these attributes was understood and respected during cutting, so that nothing of value was sacrificed for flash, and every decision was made to create balance between brilliance, color, and weight retention.

The cut that we chose is central to the story of how this sapphire catches and returns light. The mixed brilliant cut places smaller, angular facets on the pavilion and crown that function like mirrors, breaking and redirecting light into flashes of blue and violet as the gem moves. The cushion outline with softly rounded corners allows larger table and crown facets that reveal the stone deep, velvety color when viewed face up, while a well proportioned pavilion depth permits light to travel through the gem core and reflect back to the eye. The precise facet junctions and the excellent polish create a high degree of internal reflection, so bright flashes are balanced by pockets of saturation that give the color a sense of depth. Because the cutter retained a mindful pavilion depth relative to the 4.52 millimeter height, the stone displays both scintillation, which is the lively sparkle seen as you move, and color body, which is the steady, intense blue that anchors the personality of the gem. The mixed brilliant arrangement also helps mask minor inclusions so that the overall visual impression remains clean and luminous, and the result is a sapphire that seems to glow from within while throwing lively sparks at the edges.

When set, this 2.58 carat Ceylon sapphire becomes a focal point that tells its own history. In a classic halo, the cushion shape and mixed brilliant cut will interact with surrounding diamonds to amplify scintillation, and in a solitaire setting the intense color and internal depth will command attention with quiet confidence. Worn close to the skin, the warm tones of the wearer will enhance the blue, while the excellent polish will create sharp flashes under changing light. At The Natural Sapphire Company we imagine this stone gracing an engagement ring, an heirloom pendant, or a custom piece that responds to a personal story. We are here to discuss mounting options that protect the girdle and highlight the table, while keeping the stone secure and beautiful for decades. If you would like to see this sapphire in hand, to experience how the mixed brilliant cut plays across the facets, or to explore setting ideas that honor its origin in Ceylon, contact us and we will assist you with close up views, custom sketches, and guidance through every step of commissioning a finished piece. This sapphire is more than a gem, it is a conversation between earth and craft, and The Natural Sapphire Company invites you to continue that conversation.
