Product description

This is a beautiful transparent 2.01 carat oval shape blue sapphire, with precise dimensions of 7.67 x 6.34 x 4.96 mm, presented by The Natural Sapphire Company. The gem has been fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut, which combines step and brilliant facets to enhance both depth of color and surface sparkle. Clarity has been graded as very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, meaning that minor internal features are present but do not detract from the overall visual appeal when viewed without magnification. Color is described as vivid in intensity, and the stone displays an excellent polish that allows light to pass cleanly through the pavilion and reflect from the crown facets. Enhancement, heat treated, is disclosed, reflecting the standard and widely accepted practice for improving color and tonal uniformity in sapphires, particularly those from Ceylon, Sri Lanka.

Optically this Ceylon sapphire shows the hallmarks that educated buyers look for in a fine blue corundum. The mixed brilliant cut maximizes return of light to the eye while preserving a deep, saturated body color, and the excellent polish contributes to crisp facet reflections and a smooth surface lustre. Sapphires exhibit refractive indices in the range of approximately 1.76 to 1.77, which translates into a strong adamantine to subadamantine lustre, and this stone demonstrates that balance between surface brilliance and internal depth. Pleochroism, the property of showing different colors or intensities from different angles, is present in most natural sapphires, and this gem displays subtle pleochroic shifts between richer royal blue and slightly purer cornflower blue tones depending on orientation. The very slightly included clarity grade means that light is not substantially scattered or obstructed by inclusions, so scintillation and overall brilliance remain pleasing and lively.

Comparing reflective qualities to other gemstones in its category helps clarify why this sapphire is desirable to a discerning buyer. Against other blue sapphires, especially those from sources such as Kashmir or Burma, this Ceylon stone offers a characteristic interplay of light and color that is often described as more transparent and lively, with a slightly cooler or brighter blue depending on the particular crystal. Kashmir sapphires are renowned for their velvety diffusion of light, producing a softer glow rather than sharp facet reflections, while Burmese stones may show intense, saturated color with strong depth. Madagascar sapphires can vary widely, but many present similar clarity and brilliance to Ceylon material. Compared to gemstones that are sometimes used as blue alternatives, such as tanzanite, blue spinel, or aquamarine, this sapphire has greater hardness at nine on the Mohs scale, meaning its polished facets will remain crisper over time and resist wear. Tanzanite often shows stronger pleochroism with violet and blue flashes and a softer vitreous lustre, while spinel typically displays high dispersion and a lively brilliance but different refractive behavior due to its lower refractive index. Diamonds have superior dispersion and fire, producing rainbow flashes that sapphires do not match, but diamonds lack the saturated blue body color that gives this sapphire its intrinsic appeal. In short, this Ceylon sapphire balances color saturation, durable polish, and lively facet reflections in a manner that distinguishes it among blue gems.

From a provenance and value perspective this offering from The Natural Sapphire Company is clearly identified as originating in Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a historical source of some of the world’s most celebrated blue sapphires. The combination of a vivid color intensity, mixed brilliant cut, excellent polish, and a transparency graded as very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, supports both aesthetic and investment considerations. Heat treatment has been disclosed as the enhancement, which is an accepted and stable treatment that improves color while leaving the crystal structure intact. For setting recommendations, the strong hardness and excellent polish make this oval sapphire ideal for everyday jewelry such as rings or pendants, with protective mounting choices advised for high wear pieces. Buyers who are comparing stones will appreciate the documented dimensions and visual references, including on finger photos that provide realistic scale and proportion. At The Natural Sapphire Company we prioritize clear disclosure and gemological detail so that educated buyers can make informed decisions, understanding how cut, clarity, color, treatment, and origin combine to determine both beauty and long term value.
