Product description

This transparent 1.02 carat greenish blue sapphire measures 7.16 x 5.81 x 3.52 mm, and displays a carefully executed fancy cut that departs from classical brilliant geometry in order to optimize color saturation and light return. The cutter has employed elongated pavilion facets and a modified crown layout to increase the path length of light within the corundum, which enhances both face up intensity and internal scintillation. Facet junctions are crisp and symmetrical, and the excellent polish produces clean facet reflections with minimal surface diffusion. The result is a stone that reads as visually larger than its carat weight might suggest, due to efficient light management and well controlled windowing. The proportions also maintain pavilion depth sufficient to avoid excessive extinction, while preserving the stone s distinctive fancy silhouette for contemporary settings.

Color performance is a defining attribute of this Nigerian sapphire, the hue sitting squarely in a greenish blue range with an intense color grade and strong saturation. The color is evenly distributed across the table and through the pavilion, with very little zoning evident to the naked eye, which is notable for a sapphire of this shape. Clarity is graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, meaning the stone is essentially eye clean with minute internal features that do not interrupt light flow or create distracting dark crystals. The combination of intense, even color and eye level clarity maximizes both color brilliance and transparency. This sapphire is natural and untreated, no enhancement, which preserves the original crystal lattice and ensures that its optical behavior is wholly native. The excellent polish complements the internal clarity, producing crisp facet reflections and a clean window to the gem s body color.

From a gemological optics perspective, corundum s relatively high refractive index, approximately 1.762 to 1.770, and modest birefringence contribute to the stone s strong internal reflection and contrast, and this specimen demonstrates those qualities particularly well. Compared to spinel, which is isotropic and has a lower refractive index near 1.712, this sapphire exhibits stronger brilliance and firmer facet contrast, because the higher refractive index increases total internal reflection at facet boundaries. Compared to beryl varieties such as aquamarine or emerald, which have refractive indices in the range of about 1.57, the sapphire returns more light per facet and produces a more lively appearance under mixed lighting. Compared to tanzanite, which is trichroic and often exhibits dramatic pleochroism, this sapphire shows dichroic behavior with two dominant tones of blue and greenish blue depending on viewing angle and light source. The fancy cut here moderates pleochroic shifts, allowing the dominant greenish blue to remain stable face up while still offering subtle color dynamics at oblique angles. Relative to classic silky Kashmir sapphires, which achieve a soft, diffused glow from dense microscopic silk inclusions, this Nigerian stone is clearer and more brilliant, delivering crisper facet reflections and more immediate sparkle while retaining a deep, saturated body color.

For the jeweller or collector seeking a durable, visually assertive center stone, this sapphire is an excellent candidate, the Mohs hardness of corundum affording daily wear resilience and the unheated origin satisfying collectors who prioritize natural provenance. The fancy shape and measured proportions lend themselves to contemporary bezel, prong, or tension settings, and the clean polish ensures predictable setability and consistent light performance once mounted. At The Natural Sapphire Company we evaluate each stone for its combined metrics of color, clarity, cut, and origin, and this 1.02 carat greenish blue Nigerian sapphire represents a strong balance of intense, natural color, precise cutting, and optical efficiency. For buyers who appreciate technical gemology and controlled light return, this stone offers a compelling profile, and we are available to discuss setting options, viewing lighting comparisons, or providing further spectroscopic and origin documentation.
