Product description

This is a transparent, natural sapphire from Madagascar, weighing 0.86 carat, presented in a classic oval outline with precise dimensions of 7.11 x 5.06 x 2.76 mm. The combination of length and width produces a face up plane that reads slightly elongated, and the measured depth of 2.76 mm gives an overall depth ratio of approximately 45 percent, which yields a relatively shallow profile that increases apparent diameter on the finger, and supports low profile mountings. The stone exhibits an intense bluish green hue with very good saturation, and it shows subtle pleochroism with blue and green tones observable as the stone is rotated, a characteristic we evaluate and exploit in custom designs. Clarity is graded as slightly included at eye level, with inclusions minimal in extent and position, not compromising integrity or polish, and the finish is excellent with clean facet junctions and a bright pavilion. The pavilion and crown are cut in a mixed brilliant style, combining the scintillation and light return of brilliant faceting with design elements that control color distribution, the result being vivid color and lively internal reflections, with no enhancement applied to alter or intensify the natural color.

Technically, the mixed brilliant faceting scheme in this oval was executed to balance fire and saturation, using smaller, well proportioned crown facets to maximize return to the table, while the complementary pavilion geometry moderates windowing and supports even color across the face up area. The cutter preserved strong facet symmetry and precise girdle thickness to allow secure setting while minimizing weight loss, and the excellent polish enhances the stone surface reflectivity, delivering crisp facet contrasts and controlled light leakage. The somewhat shallow depth, near 45 percent, increases face up spread, making the 0.86 carat appear larger than stones with deeper pavilion proportions, and it also lowers the profile when mounted, which is a desired attribute for designs requiring comfort and everyday wear. The mixed approach to faceting reduces the risk of dark windowing common in thin or shallow ovals by carefully angling pavilion facets to reflect light back through the table, and the outcome is an oval that balances brilliance and color depth, particularly effective for bluish green sapphires where both chroma and nuanced tone are important.

For custom jewelry applications, this oval sapphire is particularly versatile due to its size and shape, and to the technical qualities of its cut and finish. The 7.11 mm length and 5.06 mm width sit well in a variety of common mounting templates, including four prong and six prong basket settings, low bezel settings that emphasize a sleek silhouette, and halo configurations that amplify perceived size through complementary melee. The relatively shallow profile suggests a low set four prong mounting or a flush bezel will keep the stone secure and close to the finger, reducing snagging while preserving the broad face up presentation. Because of the strong face up color and the mixed cut that controls flash and color zoning, the stone is suitable as a center gem for an engagement ring, a pendant where light entry from above is predominant, or as a standalone solitaire in a fine jeweled setting. In design terms, metal choices from platinum to 18 karat yellow or rose gold can be used to either contrast or harmonize with the bluish green tone, and careful orientation of the oval to align its longest axis with the finger or neckline will optimize perceived length and color flow.

At The Natural Sapphire Company we assess each stone with an eye toward practical design integration and long term wearability, and this Madagascar sapphire typifies a gem that is both technically interesting and immediately ready for bespoke mounting. We can provide exact setting templates, recommend prong configurations that protect the girdle and accommodate the 2.76 mm depth, and advise on complementary accent stones and metal choices to achieve your desired aesthetic while preserving the integrity of the natural, unheated sapphire. If you prefer a lower profile daily wear piece we recommend a well proportioned bezel or four prong low basket, and if you seek maximum perceived size we recommend a halo with calibrated melee set to draw the eye outward from the center oval. This sapphire combines natural, unenhanced color, excellent polish, and a thoughtful mixed brilliant approach to faceting, making it a strong candidate for custom projects where technical precision and visual performance are paramount.
