Product description

This 0.68 carat Ceylon sapphire is a rare example of violet coloration, a hue we describe as orchid, and it arrives to you through The Natural Sapphire Company with full provenance and gemological confirmation, the stone presented as transparent, vivid in color intensity, and untreated. The gem measures 4.92 x 4.80 x 2.87 millimeters, and those finished dimensions yield an overall depth that harmonizes color saturation and light performance, the relative depth being approximately fifty nine percent, a proportion that suits an asscher style pavilion and crown profile. Clarity has been graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, indicating that inclusions are minimal to the unaided eye and do not disrupt the optical geometry, and the polish is recorded as excellent, meaning facet surfaces are clean and mirror like, and facet junctions are precise.

The cutting style is asscher, executed here in an octagon outline, and the geometry is the defining technical feature that produces exceptional light play. The asscher method uses a series of concentric step facets on the crown and pavilion which act like parallel mirrors, channeling light inward and then reflecting it back as defined flashes rather than broad, dispersed brilliance. Because the pavilion depth is moderate and the table proportion is controlled, the step facets produce a layered, hall of mirrors effect, with crisp, angular scintillation from the truncated corners and the square central table. The faceting symmetry and alignment are crucial with this cut, and in this specimen they are delivered with tight symmetry, resulting in consistent light return across the face up view and minimal light leakage at the girdle. The octagonal outline refines the asscher aesthetic, softening the square silhouette while maintaining strong linear facet geometry, and the result is an architectural appearance that reads equally well in both classic and contemporary settings.

Optically the vivid orchid violet shows the best attributes of Ceylon origin, where trace element chemistry and crystal growth conditions often favor bright, saturated tones with a medium to slightly deep tone that reads lively in both daylight and incandescent light sources. In corundum, dispersion is limited compared with diamond, so color and facet architecture are the primary contributors to visual interest. The step cut used here emphasizes color concentration and directional flashes, so the viewer experiences a sequence of vivid color flashes and ribbon like reflections rather than the pinfire brilliance associated with brilliant cuts. The stone’s very slightly included clarity grade means that inclusions, when present, are small and typically aligned with internal growth features, and they are effectively masked by the step facets and the depth percentage, preserving apparent transparency and allowing the violet hue to remain uninterrupted. Excellent polish enhances edge sharpness and facet contrast, making the geometry read with crisply defined planes, and the absence of any enhancement confirms the natural state of color and clarity.

From a design and setting perspective this asscher octagon sapphire adapts to a range of mounting concepts while preserving its geometric identity. A low profile bezel with precision corner prongs will protect the truncated corners and emphasize the clean octagonal lines, whereas a minimalist four prong rail or an east west bar style will showcase the central table and allow light to enter unobstructed for optimal flash. Because the stone is under one carat with compact dimensions, it translates elegantly into solitaire rings, halo settings that add weight and frame the asscher geometry, or as an accent gem in multi stone designs where matching pairs or step cut companions can be sourced to maintain optical harmony. The Natural Sapphire Company can provide detailed imagery, certified documentation, and recommendations for custom settings that preserve the stone’s geometric faceting and maximize its unique light play. If you would like a close up viewing, measurements verified in hand, or tailored mounting suggestions, we will be pleased to assist.
