Product description

This matched pair consists of a 0.93 carat cushion shape blue sapphire and a 0.97 carat cushion shape blue sapphire, sourced from Ceylon Sri Lanka and presented by The Natural Sapphire Company. The individual dimensions are 6.35 x 4.95 x 2.99 mm and 6.30 x 4.95 x 3.17 mm, demonstrating closely controlled length and width correspondence with a modest variance in depth. Both stones have been cut in a mixed brilliant style, exhibit intense color intensity, and have been evaluated at eye level as very very slightly included. The surface finish is graded excellent polish, and both stones have undergone standard heat treatment to enhance color and minimize internal turbidity in a stable and widely accepted manner. Taken together, these specifications reflect a purposefully matched pair intended for paired jewelry applications such as earrings or a matched set, where concordance of hue, saturation, and cut dynamics is essential.

From a faceting and cutting standpoint, the mixed brilliant approach employed here is designed to reconcile two often competing objectives, color saturation and light return. In these sapphires the cutter has used a brilliant facet array across the crown to maximize return of white light and scintillation, while employing larger, carefully angled pavilion facets that behave in a quasi step configuration to effectively concentrate the blue bodycolor and reduce undesired light leakage. The cushion outline preserves a softened rectangular footprint with gently rounded shoulders, allowing the crown table and star facets to sit slightly broader than in a strict round brilliant, which increases apparent face up color. The relatively shallow to moderate depths, 2.99 mm and 3.17 mm respectively, are deliberate trade offs to maintain face up spread and saturation without creating a dark window or excessive windowing. Facet junctions are tightly aligned to promote face up symmetry, which in a matched pair reduces disparity in facet reflections and ensures that both stones display comparable brilliancy and flash under similar lighting conditions.

Clarity and internal features were managed in the cutting and selection stages to achieve the very very slightly included grade at eye level. In practice this means transparent material with only minor pinpoint or feather inclusions that do not interrupt the visual plane when mounted in standard settings. The presence of small, well oriented inclusions can actually aid the cutter in orienting the rough to maximize color zoning and pleochroic response, and in these Ceylon sapphires the cutter oriented the pavilion and table to emphasize the dominant blue pleochroic axis. Heat treatment was applied in a controlled manner to enhance hue saturation and to heal internal silk and other minor growth-related features, rather than to create color where none existed. The result is a stable, intense blue that retains the characteristic brightness and telegraphing of Ceylon material. Excellent polish contributes significantly to perceived clarity and color, by removing surface disturbances and ensuring uninterrupted facet faces that reflect and refract light efficiently.

As a matched set crafted for precision pairing, these sapphires have been selected and finished with mounting and design integration in mind. The close agreement in length and width, together with the cut strategy, means that when set side by side, differences are minimized and the pair will present a unified color block with coordinated scintillation patterns. The slight depth variance of 0.18 mm is within acceptable tolerances for matched gemstones and will have negligible impact when mounted in bezel or prong settings that are designed to conceal girdle thickness differences. For jewelry applications that prioritize face up color, the mixed brilliant cushion design here is particularly effective, offering strong color saturation and lively light return whether set in white metal to accentuate brilliance, or in warmer metals to enhance perceived depth. The Natural Sapphire Company applies rigorous matching protocols, assessing tone, saturation, cut symmetry, and facet alignment, and these two sapphires exemplify that process, delivering a technically achieved pairing that balances raw material characteristics, cutting economics, and aesthetic outcomes.
