Product description

This pair of natural Ceylon sapphires presents a transparent, deep blue presence, with individual weights of 0.41 carats and 0.49 carats respectively. Each stone is fashioned in a round shape with a mixed brilliant cut, and precise dimensions of 4.51 by 4.52 by 2.79 millimeters for the smaller stone, and 4.56 by 4.58 by 3.14 millimeters for the larger stone. Clarity is graded very slightly included as evaluated at eye level, indicating minimal internal features that do not detract from overall visual performance. Color intensity is described as dark, yielding a saturated blue that reads consistently across the pair, and the polish is excellent, offering fully faceted surfaces that interact cleanly with incident light. These sapphires have been heat treated, a stable and widely accepted enhancement for corundum that optimizes color and removes undesirable undertones, and their reported origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a source known for producing richly colored blue sapphires with a characteristic velvety tone.

In terms of optical performance, these sapphires display a measured balance of brilliance and internal reflection that is characteristic of corundum. Sapphire has a refractive index in the region of 1.76 to 1.77, which produces a notable, but inherently softer, brilliance than diamond, which refracts light more strongly. When compared to diamond, these sapphires will not exhibit the same fiery scintillation, but they compensate with a deeper, more saturated body color and pleasing internal glow, especially when cut as mixed brilliants that combine pavilion facets optimized for light return with crown facets that favor color display. Relative to ruby, which is also gem quality corundum, these blue sapphires offer equivalent optical mechanics, with differences driven primarily by hue and saturation rather than by light return potential. Compared to spinel, which often shows a similar luster, sapphire tends to present a slightly higher refractive index and greater durability, yielding more persistent surface reflection. Emerald typically exhibits lower overall brilliance because of common inclusions and a lower refractive index, and tanzanite, while capable of strong luster, presents strong pleochroism that can alter perceived color and reflection with viewing angle, a phenomenon not present in a uniformly colored sapphire pair such as this.

Practical considerations for jewelry design and long term wear highlight the suitability of these stones for a range of settings. With a Mohs hardness of nine, sapphire is highly resistant to abrasion and well suited to daily wear, notably for earrings where paired balance and consistent color are important. The matched sizes and closely aligned proportions in this pair facilitate symmetrical mounting in stud settings, and the mixed brilliant cut and excellent polish ensure reliable light return when set close to the eye. Heat treatment is disclosed and considered stable, meaning color improvements are permanent under normal wearing conditions, and the very slightly included clarity grade indicates that routine cleaning will maintain the stones appearance without special precautions. The Natural Sapphire Company documents origin and treatment for transparency, and these sapphires represent an example of Ceylon material where depth of color, durable hardness, and carefully executed cutting combine to deliver a refined, enduring blue that compares favorably to other gem species for applications that prioritize color saturation and lasting wearability.
