Padparadscha sapphires are treasured by gemstone connoisseurs. The term "padparadscha" is derived from the Singhalese word for an aquatic lotus blossom, which has an unusual salmon color. Padparadscha sapphires are both pink and orange, but there is no uniform standard for the padparadscha color range. For centuries, Sri Lanka was the only source for padparadscha sapphires. Madagascar is now producing padparadscha sapphires as well. Padparadscha sapphires are very rare and command high prices.
