Sapphire Durability

In addition to their beauty, sapphires have attributes that make them an excellent gemstone for jewelry.  Sapphires are very durable, which means they are tough, hard, and can withstand chemical attack.

Because sapphires are tough, they are not prone to chipping, cracking, or breaking. They can be polished to a bright sheen and can take the stress of everyday wear.  Their resistance to chemicals means that your stone will not become etched or lose its polish under normal conditions.

Because sapphires are hard, they are not easily scratched or affected by abrasion.  Sapphires rate 9 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, an index of the relative hardness of gemstones.  Each mineral can scratch the ones below it on the scale.  The steps in the scale do not represent a uniform increase in hardness.  In absolute terms, diamond is almost four times harder than ruby or sapphire.
