Recently I’ve been working on a photo shoot to highlight some of our exceptional sapphire jewelry for the upcoming holiday season.  Because sapphires come in so many brilliant colors, it was easy to work out a color palette to reflect the season.  Backgrounds of deep golds and rich greens perfectly showcase our beautiful yellow sapphires, while blues, pinks, and padparadschas are paired with shimmering silver.

Here are just a couple shots from the photo shoot:

Natural Untreated Unique Colored Sapphires

doelay
November 11th, 2008 by doelay

Everyone has their favorite color, and for the most part, my favorite color is blue. However, when it comes to sapphires, my preference has changed.

Natural Untreated Unique Lime Green Sapphire

My favorite sapphires are the beautiful collection of natural untreated unique colored sapphires, especially the lime green colored sapphires.  I am always fascinated by the mixture of green and yellow that created this beautiful lime green color.

Natural Untreated Unique Lime Green Sapphire in Custom Mounting

Compared to a blue sapphire, lime green colored sapphires are cheaper, and the color can easily be just as brilliant and vivid even under the natural light. In addition to that, these sapphires truly are unique, and you are guaranteed to turn heads on the street with a beautifully vivid unique colored sapphire.  These stones are extremely rare and not many people get the opportunity to own something so truly unique.

Elegant Dangling Earrings for the Holiday Season

November 11th, 2008 by wakako

I recently worked on these two pairs of earrings. They are suitable for a fancy night out or just a cocktail party during the holiday season.

Elegant Dangling Earring With Natural Untreated Sapphires

In both of the pieces, the stones are held by a bezel setting and the primary stones are located on the bottom in order to preserve the beautiful flow of the earrings.  On JS352 the large primary stones are set in a flat domed sphere. The shape echoes the feel of the 1920’s art deco movement. You can enjoy the gorgeous color of your natural untreated sapphire because the backs are very elegantly open in order to allow maximum light return for the stone.

On JS472, the central rubies help to add accents to the piece. The diamond shaped middle piece helps to accentuate the beautiful larger stones above and below it as the earrings stretch along the cheek to jaw.  I would suggest using your own taste in order to create a combination of colors you truly enjoy so that your earrings are a one of a kind unique piece of jewelry.

During the modeling process, it was very difficult to create the correct amount of functionality in the connection between the parts. Each piece has to have a space for the next piece to hang while still having enough space for movement and also making sure the stones and connections were secure.  The movement is a part of design, because if the connections were stiff the earrings would not hang naturally and would look very rigid and unattractive.

The functional structure does not disturb the design but rather enhances the overall beauty of the design.

There are endless possibilities when hand drawing designs to catch people’s eyes, but what is on paper does not always transfer to the real thing and in turn they function poorly.

I hope these earrings are able to brighten up peoples holiday season.

Sapphire Boom Towns, A Modern Day Gold Rush

Michael
October 30th, 2008 by Michael

Madagascar is an exotic place.  When people use the phrase ‘end of the earth’ Madagascar would be a good place to point to as an example.

In 1998 I visited Madagascar.  The sapphire deposits had just been unearthed earlier in the year, and the first stones that I saw were so beautiful that I promptly jumped on a plane.

Sapphire Mining in Madagascar

This was not my first visit to Africa, as I had previously visited parts of Kenya and Tanzania a few years earlier, but I had never really been to the ‘the end of the earth’ until I reached the mining areas of Madagascar.

The sapphire mines were all new when I arrived, there were only a few thousand people digging, and the production was slow and small.  Yet super beautiful pink and blue sapphires seemed to be coming from every pit.

I purchased a few nice rough pieces, but nothing large, mainly small sapphires that would cut to about 1-2cts in size.  I wanted to stay for 6 months, but at that time there was no running water, no electricity, no place to sleep, it was a boom town and only the hard core miners were living in these very harsh conditions.

Sapphire Mining City in Madagascar

Today almost 10 years later there is a city in Tulear Madagascar.  There are now well over 100,000 people mining for sapphires.  There are hotels, bus stops and general stores.  An entire city now exists around the gem mines and each day more infrastructure is put in place.  The World Bank and other international government organizations have a presence there now.  It is truly a boom town, modern day gold rush.

It’s a great time in Madagascar, these people have hope and great opportunities that never existed in the history of the entire country.

In early 2009 I plan another trip, I can’t wait to compare my photo’s from 1998!

Halloween Fun with Sapphires

mimi
October 30th, 2008 by mimi

Yesterday, with no big idea in mind, I took a photo of a pink star sapphire and just couldn’t resist editing the photo that I took. It was smiling right at me.

Beautiful Smiley 32.85ct Pink Star Sapphire

Since Halloween is tomorrow I figured I could do some touch up work on the images and make them fun, so that is exactly what I did.

Naughty or Nice Pink Star Sapphires

You might be wondering where I got the inspiration for this.  It is none other than the CIO of The Natural Sapphire Company.

Whatever the idea may be, Halloween is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, not just the trick-or-treaters. Take some time to sit down and make something fun for Halloween. No matter what your artistic and crafty skill level is, there are plenty of things that can be made by virtually anyone, regardless of age.

Custom Sapphire Rings For Astrological Purposes

susu
October 22nd, 2008 by susu

Sapphires are not only an attractive precious gem that people wear for beauty, but also some people use sapphires for healing and astrological purposes. Since I am the in-house production manager, I work with customers in order to come up with a design that fits their specific needs.

Lately, I have been working with two customers in order to make a sapphire ring for their astrological beliefs. I would like to share the experience of creating these gorgeous rings with all of you.

Custom Natural Untreated Blue Sapphire Ring

In most cases, when dealing with healing or astrological reasons, we need to make a custom design in order to make sure the stone touches the skin. For many, when the stone is touching the skin, that is allowing the powers of the stone to enter into your body. Two of the rings that we made recently for these purposes were for two sisters. One was with a 7.09ct natural untreated vivid blue cushion cut sapphire, and the other was a 6.91ct natural untreated vivid yellow cushion cut sapphire.

Custom Natural Untreated Yellow Sapphire Ring

The yellow sapphire was set into a modern solitaire setting (JS25) using yellow gold. Yellow sapphires help to remove toxins from the body, stimulate the intellect and bring prosperity.

Beautiful Custom Designed Natural Untreated Blue Sapphire Ring

The blue sapphire was set into white gold and accented with micro pave diamonds. Blue Sapphires help to ward off negative energies and help to calm the nerves and emotions of the wearer. They are also good for those people who are intent on finding spiritual truth.

Next time you need a sapphire, whether it be for an engagement, anniversary, healing purposes, astrological reasons, or anything else, remember that we have the greatest collection of natural untreated sapphires in the world and will work closely with you to design and create a finished piece that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Custom Antique Setting 3D design wins top award in Gemvision Competition

koichiro
October 9th, 2008 by koichiro

Recently I entered a custom ring design of mine into the 2008 Gemvision competition.  I decided to go with an antique style for my design, and of course a natural untreated sapphire.  In building this design I wanted it to have a very organic feel to it, and I think the final product really accentuates that fact.  I chose to go with the combination of rose gold and a natural untreated pink sapphire.  I think the rose gold really helps to intensify the overall color of the natural pink sapphire.  This mounting, all though it has a very free flowing organic feel to it, is actually a very technically difficult design to create.  You can see all the detail that went into the design if you look at the picture below.

3rd Place Winning Custom Antique Setting

Overall I was very pleased with my design, and it earned me 3rd place for technical merit in the competition.  To design this piece I used a jewelry specific CAD software, which is fantastic for jewelry design.

JS10 Custom Antique Design for our Natural Untreated Sapphires

This charming custom antique setting is now available on our site as JS10, and you are not restricted to using rose gold and a pink sapphire, in fact you can choose the sapphire of your dreams and then choose whichever metal you prefer to have surrounding your beautiful natural sapphire.  To inquire about this beautiful design, another design, or any of our stunning natural sapphires contact us by email or phone and we will be more than willing to accommodate your needs.

The Spiritual and Medicinal Properties of Sapphires

erika
October 1st, 2008 by erika

Sapphires are known as the stones of wisdom and serenity.  They are said to have the power to release mental tension, dispel depression, facilitate meditation, calm the mind, and provide mental clarity.

Sapphires align the physical, mental, and spiritual planes and restore balance within the body.  When worn at the throat, they facilitate creativity and self-expression.

Sapphires are used to develop the “third eye,” and are often associated with out-of-body experiences, telepathy, and precognition.

A representation of the seven Chakras

Specific colors of sapphires are believed to have additional attributes:

Star sapphires are exceptional for their protective qualities.  They promote astral travel, precognition, and cleanse the chakras.  The rays of the star represent faith, hope, and destiny.

Yellow sapphires bring prosperity, stimulate the intellect, and remove toxins from the body.

White sapphires open the crown chakra, which elevates spirituality and cosmic consciousness.

Blue sapphires are especially effective for chakra healing-especially the throat chakra.  They are a good stone for those who are intent on finding spiritual truth.

Purple sapphires improve meditation and psychic abilities.  They are also effective in calming overwrought emotions.

Green sapphires stimulate the heart chakra improving one’s capacity for compassion, loyalty, and trust in others.  They also enhance one’s ability to recall dreams.

Pink sapphires remove emotional stumbling blocks and illuminate the path to higher consciousness.  They attract positive elements into a person’s life.

Black sapphires build both careers and the power of intuition.

Medicinal Properties of Sapphires

Sapphires, if worn, ingested, or otherwise applied to the body, have long been credited with an ability to heal numerous medical and mental conditions.

General Medical Applications

Since ancient times, sapphires have been used to protect the wearer by boosting the immune system.  They were said to calm overactive body systems, treat disorders of the blood, and regulate the glands.  They were believed to alleviate the suffering caused by rheumatism, allergies, biliousness, hiccups, and cancer.  They were known to cure chronic fevers and epilepsy.  It was thought that when placed on the forehead, blue sapphires could end headaches, nightmares, nosebleeds, and even increase a person’s life span.

Poison

One of the most commonly espoused uses of sapphires was for treatment of poison and insect bites.

Eyesight

The ancient Egyptians used ground sapphires for eyewashes.  The idea that sapphires were beneficial for the eyes persisted through the Middle Ages.  One of the specific “virtues” of sapphires was their ability to “empower the eye to eject a troublesome foreign body,” thus restoring impaired vision.  The Dominican monk, Albertus Magnus (1327-1377) recorded that he saw a sapphire remove a foreign body from the eye.  In 1391, a sapphire was donated to St. Paul’s Church in London by Richard-de-Preston, a grocer, so that it might cure the eye ailments of pious petitioners.

Mental Health and General Wellbeing

Early medieval writers believed that sapphires could reduce outbreaks of rage, dispel malicious behavior, and repel envy. They were considered helpful for treating colic, mental illness, and hysteria, and they were considered a good anti-depressant.

Sapphires Meet Consumer Demand for Personalized Jewelry

Michael
September 30th, 2008 by Michael

Compared to diamonds, sapphires are highly individual gems.

Quality in diamonds depends upon objective standards that create uniform “quality” characteristics.

White diamonds are prized for an absence of color and internal features–even ones invisible to the naked eye–and for their precision cuts.

Sapphires, on the other hand, are valued for their individuality and strength of color—and they come in every color of the rainbow!  Consumers are ever more interested in a gemstone that is one of a kind, such as their personality or love for their partner.

No two sapphires are the same.

No two sapphires are the same.

Fine sapphire rough is so rare that stones are not always cut into standard shapes or proportions.  Instead, the dimensions of the rough crystal, the distribution of color, and the location of significant inclusions determine the shape of a finished gem.

Natural sapphires rarely, if ever, exhibit the total absence of visible inclusions expected in high quality diamonds.  This means that every sapphire comes with its own unique “birthmarks.”  Some sapphire inclusions, including silk, may actually increasea stone’s value, since they give a stone its velvety texture, its asterism, and furnish proof of its natural, untreated origin.   These one of a kind natural characteristics are what make natural sapphires so special.
